Total War Warhammer 3 Ranged Units Hold Fire

Total War – Ranged units in Warhammer 3 can no longer freely fire through friendly forces in the strategy game, as Creative Assembly undid the recent buff that allowed them to ignore friendly units in line of sight in a new solution. This change to make firing ranged units more reliable resulted in a rather fun but undeniably unfortunate strategy of stacking large numbers of units directly on top of each other.

The original change read: “To avoid cases where ranged units hold fire because a friendly unit is in the line of fire, overlapping units are now considered part of the same unit. This should allow ranged units to follow firing orders more consistently.” However, the Creative Assembly acknowledges that its implementation has been “a bit over the top”.

“Not only did this fix the LOS issue,” Creative Assembly said in a post about the patch, “it allowed ranged units to stack up and fire in a way that largely negated the importance of positioning your troops.” Positioning is an important part of the strategy that makes Total War battles special, so this change really felt out of place.

YouTuber Milkandcookies talks about the “terrible and hilarious” changes in a recent video – he uses that wording partly because it makes stacking ranged units such a solid strategy, but also because it seems so silly. Units can be joined into a close-knit troop of knights simply by unleashing a blast of ranged weapon fire and magic through their units against enemy forces.

Milkandcookies notes that this change is “very dangerous” for the AI, but also quite strong in competitive player encounters. Fortunately, this solution means you no longer have to worry about it. Creative Assembly says they “plan to go back to the original version in the future,” but hopefully in a less extreme way.

In other Total War: Warhammer 3 news, factions in the game will be getting a new version of Immortal Empires for a giant update to the sandbox game that will feature a map twice the size of Warhammer 2. is developing another Creative Assembly Warhammer game: it’s a third-person melee game.
