Gigabyte just released its biggest 4K gaming monitor yet, but there’s a big caveat that it could cause GPU issues. For whatever reason, this 55-inch beast lacks Displayport, instead just using HDMI ports.
In the press release, Gigabyte shares details of its S55U 4K gaming monitor, including display specifications and additional features. The screen looks like a living room TV due to its 55-inch size, but the 120Hz panel sets it apart from a regular TV. However, you don’t technically need to connect your gaming PC to use the display, as Android’s built-in capabilities allow it to be used as a standalone smart device.
Speaking of connectivity, removing Displayport can cause some headaches. While the company claims the monitor includes “industry-leading HDMI 2.1 support,” you’ll need a current-gen GPU to enjoy 4K 120Hz. Even the best previous generation graphics cards like the RTX 2080 rely on Displayport 1.4 to achieve that output height, so it’s safe to say the company is in a hurry to drop support.
Monitor port issues aside, the Gigabyte S55U panel features quantum dot technology and full local dimming to help extend its HDR10+ capabilities. In addition to supporting 120Hz, it also has a 2ms response time, which is suitable for professional gamers and esports enthusiasts.
The Gigabyte S55U is currently listed on Newegg and appears to be out of stock. Whether new providers will appear remains to be seen, but you should probably consider some of the other best gaming monitor options if you’re using a slightly older GPU.
