The Prisoner is one of the beginner lessons of the Elden Ring, and while slightly more involved than the Wanderer or Warrior, it’s still a good starting point for players trying to get their hands on the magical use of the Elden Ring. Here’s how to install it in a spell killing machine.

The Prisoner begins the game with a medium increase in Mastery and Intelligence, a small increase in Spirit, and an even smaller increase in Energy, Stamina, and Strength. The only stats he rejects are Arcane and Faith.
As a prisoner, you want to split your stats between Energy, Agility, Intelligence, and Spirit. Juggling all four stats can make progress difficult. At the start of the game, you’ll want to focus on increasing your mastery level to keep up with the game and make sure you deal enough physical damage to increase your casting speed.
By unlocking better spells, you can start adding more stats to the intelligentsia to make them more effective. Along the way, you’ll want to score a few points here and there in Stamina – increasing your stamina and allowing you to wear more armor – and spirit – increasing your FP pool.
Therefore, you want your stats to look like this:
Your path to this goal may vary depending on what you find most useful, but you should always prioritize getting your base stats to 20 before moving forward. This is the first soft hat for most stats, after which the gain per level decreases slightly.
Any weapon in Elden Ring can get you through the endgame, but starting with Thrust the Prisoner is pretty compelling. Changing it to Uchigatana would probably make your life easier. This long katana has a wide reach, fast attack, large scale of dexterity, enemy position destroying weapon art and the ability to cause bleeding.
To get it, go to the Death-Touched Catacombs in West Limgrave. You’ll find them east and north of Warmaster’s Shack buried in the rocks. Go through the hips until you are attacked by the skeletons of two archers shooting at you from above. Go from there and you will find Uchigatana waiting to be moved with one or two hands.
For a relatively early upgrade to your staff, head south to the Bridge of Sacrifice, the ruins of the Demiman Forest. Clear out the remnants of the mob inside and the giant will strike the demi-human queen’s scepter.
As a prisoner, you are not locked into a particular style of armor. Light armor will make you faster and a bit more invincible, but it will cost you to wear heavier armor. Heavy armor has huge damage reduction abilities, but it forces a slow and vulnerable role. Medium armor strikes a balance between the two.
If you decide to keep it light, you can drop some of your first gear – after all, armor is far less important than good dodging. You’ll need to log into the starter kit with a moderate scroll and quickly get heavy armor by killing enemies during gameplay. You won’t find many of the best armor in the game later on, but as always with Souls games, the real best armor is armor you can’t step into.
