Blizzard Entertainment today announced it has acquired Boston-based Proletariat to better serve the community of World of Warcraft®, the award-winning massively multiplayer online role-playing game.
Proletariat was founded in 2012 by industry veterans from companies such as Insomniac, Harmonix and Turbine. The team has extensive MMORPG experience, including former design leaders from Asheron’s Call, Lord of the Rings Online, and Dungeons & Dragons Online, among others. At Proletariat, the team has been working with online games for almost a decade, including the latest release of Spellbreak, a critically acclaimed cross-platform action game and spell battle royale.
The Proletariat team began working with the World of Warcraft developers in May and will be fully integrated with Blizzard Entertainment in the coming months. This acquisition is another major step in Blizzard Entertainment’s mission to support its talented team creatively and culturally by building the AAA experience across its iconic franchises.
“We put gamers first in everything we do and work hard to exceed their expectations,” said Mike Ybarra, president of Blizzard Entertainment. “An important part of taking care of our players is also taking care of our teams—providing them with the resources they need to create games that our community will love, as well as giving them the space to explore even more creative possibilities within their projects. Proletariat is ideally placed to support Blizzard’s mission to deliver quality content to our players more frequently.”
“We are very excited to be joining Blizzard Entertainment. World of Warcraft is one of the most influential games ever made, and we can’t wait to be a part of that legacy and help build an even brighter future for Azeroth,” said Seth Sivak, CEO and co-founder of Proletariat.
