Phobia, or to give it its full name, Phobia: St Dinfna Hotel, is a new first-person horror game available now on Steam, and from what we’ve seen so far it’s similar to Outlast, but with a shotgun decapitation.
Created by Pulsatrix and Maximum Games, the publisher who previously worked on Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach and Among Us, Fobia casts you as an aspiring journalist sent to investigate the eponymous and heavily haunted St Dinfna hotel. Something very spooky is happening, and as the architecture of the hotel transforms around you and you’re attacked by enemies that seem half cyberpunk, half Lovecraftian nightmare, you’ll have to find clues and use them to solve a series of increasingly enigmatic puzzles. . . It’s pure survival horror and you can see more of it in the trailer below.
You will also notice a handheld camera in the game. Just like Outlast, which recently set an incredible new world speed record, it serves as a sight and night vision, allowing you to unlock the hidden secrets behind the true nature. and navigate through dark and oppressive corridors.
But it’s not a run-and-hide horror like Amnesia or The Blair Witch Project. In Phobia, if you’re stuck or feeling brave, you’ll have a number of weapons to help you take on the monsters in the hotel. Ammo is scarce and enemies are strong, but it’s a welcome extra layer to the current genre, especially when you’re taking headshots from an old double-barreled cannon and splattering the walls with bright red blood.
Phobia is available now on Steam, and there’s also a free demo if you want to try before you buy. From what we’ve seen, it’s an ambitious mashup of all the classic horror movies of the last decade, and we can’t wait to see how they fit together.
