The philosophy that guided the development of Blizzard’s World of Warcraft spinoff, WoW Classic, can be summed up in a hashtag first popularized by die-hard members of the fan community: #NoChanges. WoW Classic was meant to offer a polished retro experience for the world’s most popular MMO, and for the most part, it succeeded.
Aside from a few minor tweaks, like including a clock in the UI from the start (presumably to prevent players from suddenly realizing they’ve missed days of work), Classic has preserved the original experience, with flaws and all. However, in a recent post, Blizzard presented a slightly updated design philosophy, explaining why some changes are needed to provide the best possible experience. Let’s review the main changes.
Naxxramas Upgrade
The original 2008 Naxxramas redesign was supposed to be easier than the 2006 original, but Blizzard says it went overboard and made it too easy. It took a long time to get to Ulduar, and Naxxramas had been hacked for a long time, even by random raiders. As such, Blizzard will increase both the health and damage of monsters and bosses in an extended raid.
Keep your heroic dungeons up to date
Veterans of the original WotLK will remember that Heroic dungeons became extremely easy midway through the expansion and became a hassle you had to put up with to get your daily emblems. Blizzard aims to change that by making sure Heroic Dungeons remains challenging and continues to provide valuable loot, although details are unclear at this time, Blizzard is exploring plans to add challenges as the expansion develops.
Updated raid and item blocking systems.
Wrath of the Lich King has seen a lot of changes and adjustments to how Badges and Raid Bans work. To provide a more consistent experience, Blizzard introduces this final blueprint early in the game to ensure emblems and raid locks work the same for every content release.
