Final Fantasy 16 Eikons: What We Know So Far

Final Fantasy 16’s search mechanics revolve around icons. Here’s what we know so far about how they will work in the upcoming RPG.

Search was a key feature of Final Fantasy games throughout the series. While many games have recurring summons such as Ifrit, Shiva, Bahamut, and others, they are usually not summoned. In Final Fantasy X, players can summon Aeons through Yuna. In Final Fantasy 13, each character revealed their own idol to summon. As for the next Final Fantasy 16, it looks like the research will return, this time as Eikons.

Recently, producer Naoki Yoshida revealed details about some Final Fantasy 16 mechanics, including how Eikons work. In an interview with Press Start, Yoshida compared Valisthea to the world of Eikons FF16 as “nuclear bombs”.

“Valistea has many different nations in the world, and each nation has its own symbol that awakens in a person, but the rules for how and to whom that symbol awakens differ between them.”

The icons awaken before supposedly dominant creatures whose protagonist is Clive Rossfield. Yoshida explained that the dominant person’s use of the icon is done by transforming it together.

“In previous Final Fantasies you always had a summoning service that used magic to summon creatures from another plane, but this time the Dominant actually summons the power of the Iconic and becomes the Iconic himself. -same.” Yoshida said.

Not all summons are available in all Final Fantasy games, some saves usually include previous and new summon options. So far, a number of classic calls have been confirmed, such as those from Eikons Final Fantasy 16:

Eikons was featured in the game’s latest State of Play trailer, “Dominance”, where players are given a brief look at how they look and fight as Eikons in Final Fantasy 16. Shiva using Diamond Dust trailer. It also shows how the icons will face off in the big battles.

It’s unclear exactly how the icons fit into the overall story, but this time around they seem to form an important aspect. As for the main character, Clive, so far it looks like his icon will be Fire Call Ifrit.

Final Fantasy 16 is currently slated for release on PlayStation 5 in summer 2023.
