According to an AMA with the game’s development team on Reddit, Overwatch 2’s support heroes are central to Blizzard’s move to a free version. Speaking of fewer supports in an FPS game compared to other roles, systems designer Gavin Winter says, “We know our support lineup needs diversity and we’ll focus on that going forward, but we can’t stop developing. harm the heroes given their popularity.”
Speaking on Reddit’s “ask me anything” Q&A section, Winter said the team doesn’t plan to actively push an equal number of heroes for each role, but that “getting more support as soon as possible” is the current goal. Following the announcement that Overwatch 2 has a seasonal model with new heroes every two seasons, game director Aaron Keller said that two of the next three heroes to come after the Season 2 hero will play a supporting role.
Speaking of possible tweaks, Keller talks about “fun changes” for Symmetra and says the next Overwatch 2 beta will include them, along with a change for Moira “halfway” through the beta’s duration. He says the team is “also considering some changes to Bridget, particularly her ultimate, which we hope to bring to the game at launch.” Rally, Bridget’s latest, has long been a talking point among players who feel the quick group heal she provides can sometimes feel like an “auto win” button.
Josh Noh, Senior Hero Designer, explains that the team hopes to provide a wide range of playstyle options that can make a big difference to the outcome of a match, but are implemented in different ways based on individual hero abilities. He suggests that “future mounts may rely more on mechanical skill, while others may focus on rewarding timing and location rather than controlling things like aim.”
The full AMA also includes a discussion of possibly reworking deleted maps, such as Assault mode locations (short answer: “only in the distant future” and “not without a lot of testing”). The team notes that Hanamura’s appearance as an on-screen payload map during the OW2 reveal trailer was “just a prototype” and that the map does not exist in-game as such. However, the old cards are still available for custom games.
A recent dev blog took a deep dive into the development process of Overwatch 2’s newest hero, explaining that Junker Queen’s design reflects her “violent nature.” The next Overwatch 2 beta will be starting shortly, so be sure to follow this link if you want to know how to try out the long-awaited multiplayer sequel and try out some of the changes for yourself.
