Elden Ring has finally arrived, with a vast open world filled with numerous catacombs and underground caverns, filled with beasts and bosses to defeat. Considering how tough Soulsborne games are, it’s wise to make sure your gaming PC is using the best Elden Ring settings for best performance. After all, the last thing you want is a drastic frame rate drop when exploring The Lands Between or fighting to protect your prized runes.
Developer FromSoftware has barely changed its approach to PC ports since Dark Souls 2, so veterans of the studio’s games should feel right at home in the settings menu. However, Elden Ring will receive a ray tracing patch at some point in the future, marking the first time a developer has implemented the technology in one of their games.
Unfortunately, some bad habits have also made their way into the Elden Ring PC port. The game is limited to 60 frames per second and does not support ultra-wide monitors like previous FromSoftware Soulsborne titles. There’s also no sign of enhanced features like AMD FSR or Nvidia DLSS, or other platform-exclusive technologies like Nvidia Reflex.

Best Elden Ring Presets
Of the four presets available in the Elden Ring settings menu, we recommend that most people choose the “High” preset for a number of reasons. First of all, it is the best option for those looking for higher visual fidelity without sacrificing too much performance. The Max preset offers some subtle improvements, but you won’t miss them too much if you can’t hit the 60fps cap while using it.
More importantly, switching to “Medium” can unfortunately make the game noticeably worse, and “Low” will exacerbate this problem to some degree. In fact, these presets degrade the look of Elden Ring to the point where we don’t explicitly recommend anyone use any of these presets if it helps. This rejection occurs despite the fact that “Medium” offers an 8% performance improvement over “High”. However, if you’re not happy with the frame rate you’re using when using the recommended preset, we’ve got a few solutions for you in our more detailed setting recommendations below.
So while there is room to improve Elden Ring’s performance levels, it comes at a significant cost as a visual representation of the game. This speaks to a bigger issue with the game’s limited scalability, as its 60fps cap prevents teams from having better graphics. cards harness their extra power. To make matters worse, many gamers will be using Steam’s most popular GPU, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060, which FromSoftware says you’ll need to meet the game’s minimum system requirements.

Because Elden Ring doesn’t have its own benchmark, we used a wide variety of indoor and outdoor gaming environments as test areas to establish recommended settings. Unfortunately, there are no individual settings that greatly affect the average frame rate in the game, which is disappointing to say the least. However, we do have some recommendations for those who want to play around with the default presets.
The main reason we don’t recommend using the Medium preset is because it affects the Shadow Quality setting. If set lower than “High”, the shadows in the game world will flicker in an extremely annoying way, which gets even worse when set to “Low”. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you set this setting to “High” if you select the “Medium” gaming preset.
The only other way to significantly increase your frame rate is to lower your game’s render resolution. This should not only help make frame rates more consistent across the vast and varied environments of Elden Ring, but also reduce VRAM usage. It’s disappointing that FromSoftware can’t include scaling features like Nvidia DLSS or AMD FSR as alternative game performance enhancements, and we hope that the company will be able to patch one of these after launch.
Elden Ring Accessibility Settings
Unfortunately, Elden Ring doesn’t have many accessibility customization options, opting for a basic set of subtitle toggles and the ability to change your hotkeys. However, gamers are limited in their ability to change their control scheme on gamepads, as functions such as movement are locked to the left thumb.
Accessibility columnist Steve Saylor offers several other criticisms of Elden Ring’s lack of accessibility options, calling it an “accessibility nightmare”. Sailor highlights the lack of menu narration, small text size, hard-to-read fonts, visual cues, and a host of other tweaks.
Elden Ring performance issues
Even with the Day 1 patch, Elden Ring was suffering from severe performance issues leading to severe frame drops. In our tests, this seemed to happen mostly when the game was released to new locations, both indoors and outdoors. On rare occasions, we have seen the game pause for a moment during the boss fight at the beginning of the game.
FromSoftware has since released an additional patch that appears to have alleviated these issues somewhat, but your experience may differ. At this point, you should probably expect to see drops here and there, especially if you’re using less powerful hardware.
It’s a shame that Elden Ring was released in the state it was in and its developer seems to have done a bit of work to get the PC platform right. The 60fps cap, combined with a lack of ultrawide support, makes the game feel like a console port. Combine that with the lack of support for ultrawide screens and the apparent lack of easy upgradeability and we’re in for a major disappointment.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t play it, as we called it a “masterpiece” in our Elden Ring review. We hope that the next ray tracing patch can make Elden the lord of this tarnished PC port.
