The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall, Bethesda’s iconic RPG, has received a beautiful remake powered by the Unity engine and is available for free on GOG. Yes. Reread this sentence. I promise you, we’re not imagining. Daggerfall Unity: The GOG Cut is the result of nearly a decade of work combining the original Daggerfall Unity project with numerous mods developed by the Elder Scrolls community.

The free game has improved interior lighting, new NPC textures, increased terrain draw distance, and even added the ability to pet cats, dogs, and horses. Basically, it would be like Daggerfall if it came out today. If, like us, you’ve ever tried to play that beloved Elder Scroll and found it nostalgic but perhaps more than old-fashioned, this is the game you’ve been waiting for.

Gavin Clayton, aka InterKarma, started working on Daggerfall in 2009, developing his own API and planning to create a full conversion mod. This project was abandoned in 2012, but was resurrected two years later as Daggerfall Unity, a new version of the game with improved graphics and 3D effects.

Various versions of Daggerfall Unity have been released since 2014, and enthusiastic Elder Scrolls players have slowly replicated the experience by creating their own mods. Daggerfall Unity: GOG Cut is a combination of all his efforts: the creator GamerZakh selected the best community mods from the past 8 years and conveniently packaged them with the original version, creating the smoothest and most beautiful Daggerfall experience.

“The GOG version of Daggerfall Unity does not require any special actions or upgrades from you,” the game’s official listing explains. Its goal is to give a new generation of gamers a unique experience of the classic open-world role-playing game.”
