Starfield Ship Design Tutorial

Do you want to know more about Starfield ship design? One of the most surprising revelations made in the extended gameplay footage shown during the Xbox and Bethesda demo was that you can not only pilot starships, but also customize and build your own ships. We may not know the exact release date for Starfield, but based on the game released so far, we know (and can infer) a surprising amount about shipbuilding.

Starfield spaceship design It seems to use a very visual editor with the ship model displayed in 3D, allowing you to “attach” parts to whatever you want. During the presentation, Todd Howard mentions that you can “completely customize the look and feel” and points out that there are many different types of modules from different manufacturers, all at a price, of course.

This also implies that you may need certain Starfield abilities to be able to buy or equip certain modules, so you may need to specialize your character if you really want to equip your ship with the latest decorations. Even if you can’t equip the parts you want, you can at least make them look pretty with different color schemes and other cosmetic tweaks. Here’s a guide to everything we know about Starfield ship design.

Starfield Ship Design Stats

We try to guess what some HUD elements refer to, but we label them as [unconfirmed] note that this is our best estimate. While we don’t know all the details about what each metric does, the demo images show that the following metrics are important when designing in Starfield:

  • To be [unconfirmed]
  • Ballistic [unconfirmed]
  • Rocket [unconfirmed]
  • shell
  • Shield
  • Burden
  • Crew
  • jump range
  • Mobility
  • maximum speed
  • ballast

We also see other stats mentioned in other parts of the ship design screen, such as “reactor” and “team power”. They seem to show how much energy you can have to equip parts with certain functions, and on the top left you can see another stat bar that shows what the distribution of energy between the different parts of the ship looks like. We think “W0, W1 and W3” refer to weapons, while the others are more obvious:

  • FR – Engine
  • storage – Shield
  • GDV – The gravity

Spaceship Design Modules

In almost every game where you have to design a spaceship, the main parts needed for assembly will be divided into different types of modules. During the showcase, we had four confirmed:

  • residential buildings – We believe that these are habitats or dwellings.
  • Landers – Facilitate landing on uneven terrain
  • reactors – Determines how much power your ship can generate.
  • shields – Protection against weapons and possible environmental impacts

We can also deduce the presence of other elements, such as cabins, engines, cargo modules and perhaps elements such as fuel tanks. You can also see a piece called “Deimos Cowling Fore” that seems to just give the spaceship more health, suggesting there will be structural categories for things like outer armor, possibly inner armor as well.

Starfield Ship Design Manufacturers

In addition to the different types of modules, there are also names of module manufacturers, even within the same category. Maybe different companies specialize in different types of parts, or maybe parts for different classes of ships.

You can also acquire some kind of rank or reputation with each company (or possibly another faction related to the Starfield manufacturer) to gain access to cheaper or better ship parts, although this may just be for fun. We’ll find out soon enough anyway, but for now, here’s a list of the Starfield makers we’ve already seen:

  • new galaxy
  • reladin
  • Nautilus
  • horizon defense
  • Xiang
  • tayo astroneering
  • Stroud-Eklund
  • Deimos

That’s all we know about Starfield. We expect there to be a lot more information ahead of launch, so stay tuned. For more on Starfield, read on to find out what we know about Starfield’s backstory, Starfield cities, and all the Starfield weapons we’ve seen.
