The Resident Evil 2 update for PC will bring it, along with Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 7, in line with current-gen consoles by adding ray tracing and other improvements, but it will also change the system requirements. Once the patch goes live, the survival horror game will no longer support DirectX 11 drivers and will only work on DirectX 12, Capcom announced in a brief update on Steam.
Some other system requirements will also change. The minimum specifications will no longer include Windows 7 and 8.1 (64-bit). You will need Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11. Resident Evil 2 currently supports Nvidia GeForce RTX 760 and AMD Radeon R7 260x, but after the update you will need at least a GeForce RTX 960 or AMD Radeon RX 460.
Capcom hasn’t said when the update is expected to be released, but some eagle-eyed netizens have already spotted updates to the franchise on Sony’s servers. This sparked speculation that they could arrive sometime after the publisher’s June 13 summer showing.
Capcom has previously said that PC updates that will bring “advanced features like ray tracing, high frame rates, and 3D audio” are expected to be released sometime after the console patches are released.
Capcom has already made improvements to Resident Evil Village on PC, and this probably won’t be the last time we see a Resident Evil game with higher minimum specs.
Resident Evil 4 Remake is being developed exclusively for next-gen hardware, which means PC requirements will likely be a bit higher as well.
It is not yet known if the features of Resident Evil 3 Remake and Resident Evil 7 will change.
And of course, if you’re playing on the Steam Deck, the spec changes won’t matter, though early signs indicate that Resident Evil isn’t among Valve’s most popular handheld games anyway.
