Striking Distance revealed the first raw gameplay footage of The Callisto Protocol during Summer Game Fest 2022, but more importantly, Striking Distance CEO Glen Schofield revealed The Callisto Protocol’s gravity gun. The Gravity Gun is one of the many weapons at your disposal in the fight for survival, and from what we’ve seen so far, it certainly seems to be the most interesting.
Callisto Protocol’s Gravity Cannon pulls enemies towards you, as its name suggests, while allowing you to fly away from obstacles, including giant fan blades that sadly seem common throughout the ship. Schofield also mentioned other abilities, including the ability to rip enemies apart. It’s terrible, but we’re not complaining. Callisto Protocol promises to be a brutal horror game, and anything that allows us to survive a little longer is fine with us.
The rest of the shot showed the protagonist solving a simple puzzle to activate some of the ubiquitous blades before meeting his end in their unrelenting grip. As you’d expect from Striking Distance, it’s definitely not for the faint of heart.
Callisto Protocol has been in development for almost two years, but we still know very little about this space horror game. Schofield was the producer of the original Dead Space, and you can see some of his influences on The Callisto Protocol.
The protagonist is locked up aboard a huge spaceship called the Dark Iron Prison, which doesn’t seem like a particularly fun place to be. How he got there, and more importantly how he can leave, remains a mystery for now, but we know that literally everyone is trying to make sure he stays there forever.
Callisto Protocol’s enemies range from bizarre to downright terrifying in the style of Dead Space, and it doesn’t seem like it will take long to get back to the home screen. Even more concerning is the number of environmental hazards beyond the sharp blades of the fan.
Although the Dead Space remake is scheduled for release in early 2023, The Callisto Protocol seems to be the scariest horror game around.
