Razer, the world’s leading gaming lifestyle brand, is using World Environment Day to announce that the Basilisk V3 and DeathAdder Essential are the first gaming mice on the planet to be ECOLOGO® certified by UL, the world leader in safety science. The peripherals are UL2710 certified, a portable electronics sustainability research certification that recognizes them as sustainable products.

Razer has gone through the entire certification process to ensure that two of its best-selling products meet the industry’s strict environmental performance standards. Receiving the ECOLOGO® label means that products have been evaluated by an independent third party and are in line with Razer’s goals of being a transparent company to the community. The release of the first ECOLOGO-certified gaming mouse is a way for Razer to reinforce its commitment to developing more environmentally friendly products, an important element of its #GoGreenWithRazer 10-year sustainability plan.

First UL ECOLOGO Certified Gaming Mice

Razer selected these products for certification not only because they are bestsellers, but also because they are a must-have for any gamer’s battlestation due to their speed, customization options and comfort. In order to certify them with the ECOLOGO® label, UL considered several sustainability criteria that comply with the EU Regulation on the Restriction of Hazardous Chemicals for skin irritation and sensitivity, and evaluated the Razer repair process, including ease of disassembly of the product by authorized service providers, as well as the method to which Razer informs about components that require handling for proper disposal.

Eco-friendly packaging was also a criterion for the mice, as they are packaged with FSC certified materials, free of heavy metals and chlorine, and printed with sustainable soy ink, so they can be easily recycled.

Finally, UL has also inspected Razer’s facilities to ensure that the mice are manufactured in locations that are committed to responsible environmental management in accordance with ISO 14001 standards.

“There’s no better way to celebrate World Environment Day than by sharing with our community that our mice are also helping to win the battle for the environment,” said Kenneth Ng, Razer’s sustainability manager. “Unlike companies that simply claim that their products are sustainable, Razer goes above and beyond to prove that our products are truly sustainable. Our community can rest assured that their beloved mice have been rigorously vetted by a trusted scientific organization that has reviewed the full list of criteria for granting us ECOLOGO® certification.”

“With the ECOLOGO® brand, companies like Razer can demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and a cleaner environment by being verified and certified by a trusted third party with one of the most trusted eco-label programs in the world,” said Doug Lockard, Vice President and General Manager UL Retail and Consumer Products Division. “Environmental labels such as ECOLOGO® certification, UL GREENGUARD certification, product environmental claims, or environmental claim verification can help customers make informed purchasing decisions by helping them choose products with environmental and sustainability performance.”

Razer and UL promote sustainable gaming production

This is not the first time Razer and UL have collaborated to become a sustainability pioneer in the gaming industry. Last year, during RazerCon 2021, Razer announced a partnership with UL to promote the Type III Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) ecolabel to encourage the sustainable production of gaming equipment. This was motivated by the fact that the video game industry does not yet have a standardized way to measure sustainable products, and Razer was looking for a way to provide that benchmark.

As part of this partnership, Razer and UL have also launched an industry-wide effort to identify key environmental impact metrics that all gaming manufacturers must measure. With Razer at the forefront of this project to make sustainability an integral part of the gaming industry, the result will be more robust solutions for manufacturers to integrate sustainable practices into every step of their manufacturing processes.

Razer is committed to going further in this mission of creating more sustainable products and is providing important information to its consumers on this topic. While the new ECOLOGO® brand will be available on all Basilisk V3 and DeathAdder Essential trim levels by the end of 2022, users need not worry that mice are already being produced in an environmentally friendly manner.
