When The Wild update for Minecraft is released, players will be able to meet the noble frog. The frogs in the sandbox game come in several varieties and have gone through several iterations since their announcement during Minecraft Live 2021, including a short-lived version that ate goats.
Eating goats for frogs began, as is often the case, as an experiment. As Minecraft game developer Vanilla Alexander Ostman explained in a recent post on the official site, Mojang had to find a way to make the frogs eat something. At first, he says, frogs were coded to eat only slime, but Ostman had to find a way to make eating behavior modifiable: creators should be able to make frogs eat other kinds of monsters or new kinds of monsters. . . have their own diets.
To test this new behavior, Ostman said he made the frogs eat goats “because I thought it would be fun.” To the delight of everyone in the studio (but probably not the goats), it worked like magic: the frogs jumped everywhere, devouring every goat they came across.
However, when he released the first beta version of the Minecraft frogs, Ostman made a big mistake: he completely forgot that he commanded the frogs to eat goats. The beta came out, people seemed to like it, and Ostman and the team went to sleep in Sweden, happy to have another fun feature in the hands of the Minecraft community.
Meanwhile, Minecraft players have discovered the monstrous eating habits of the new frogs. Videos have appeared on the Internet with titles such as “The frog ate the whole goat”. The next day, Eastman felt mixed emotions as he saw what had happened. “I literally fell out of my chair laughing, I was SO embarrassed, but at the same time, it was absolutely hilarious,” he says.
Ostman says he fixed the bug right away, but players liked it and asked him to fix it. “To this day, every once in a while someone tags me to bring back the goat frog,” he says. “On our team, it even became kind of an inside joke.”
The frogs were originally intended to be eaten by fireflies, but Ostman says the Minecraft community has indicated that they may be toxic to frogs in the real world. Now the little amphibians only feed on mucus, a much safer food source, they told us.
