The gaming market is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world. Until 2023, the sector is expected to grow by 7.2%, reaching almost R1 trillion a year, according to the specialized consulting agency Newzoo. In addition, playing games is not only a “boyish” thing: according to the Game Brazil Survey (PGB), women already make up 53% of gamers, meaning they are increasingly embedded in this universe.

However, research shows that the role played by game developers is still modest, with only 24% of positions held by women out of the 14 largest global game companies. Another study by the consulting company IDC (International Data Corporation) indicates that only 5.8% of people in developer positions are women.

Given this, the market has changed this scenario a bit. There are already some steps in place to change reality and help increase women’s engagement, such as certifications and seals for companies that support diversity through hiring, Abragames said.

According to Rogerio Felix, director of training and game development at ZION, which is considered one of the main schools for training game developers, during the pandemic, the number of women seeking to gain qualifications in games has increased significantly. over the past two years, the presence of women in our divisions has grown by 15%, and we believe that this number can increase even more,” estimates the chief executive.

The pandemic has further accelerated the growth of the gaming market. Brazil alone exceeded R10 billion in 2021, up 5% from the previous year, making the country the top earner in this sector in Latin America and ranked 12th globally. This shows how companies are looking for developers to meet public demand.

The game development profession is a promising one with huge demand and market demand for people with the right qualifications. “The gaming sector has produced a lot of professionals, and even with this much development, it’s still not enough for this area, as companies are already complaining about the workforce,” says Felix.

Breakthrough paradigm in qualification in the gaming industry

The growth of the female audience in the games has had a strong impact as they have gained more and more space and an important event in the world of e-sports has taken place, one of them is the first women’s FIFA tournament in Latin America, hosted by the Women Up Games, focused on the involvement of women.

Among so many opportunities that ZION provides to its students, Taina Gama de Souza (27 years old) won the ZION Connection Championship, which brought her excellent results, such as the opportunity to work for two months with the largest game manufacturer in Latin America, called Kokku, is in Recife. “ZION has contributed to changing my professional life. We have to live a new experience, and ZION and Kokku offered it to me, and I grab it with all my might.”
