Protection is one of the most important mechanics in League of Legends. Totem placement gives the team visibility into the area, making it a very important aspect of knowing the map and tracking the enemy team. For players struggling with the basics of falling, here are some tips.
At the start of the game, players will have the choice between Warding Totem, which allows them to place beacons, and Oracle Lens, which allows them to scan and destroy enemy beacons. Most players will want to head straight to Warding Totem. If you play with a support unit using Spellthief’s Edge, this item will turn into a protection item when you receive 500 gold drops.
When this happens, you should upgrade to Oracle Lens as soon as possible.

Knowing where to protect yourself is very important. Often players want shelter in the bushes between their lanes and the reef. For bot lane players, this means the tri-bush is maxed out. For the best players, this also means protecting the river. Intermediate routes should focus on protecting the upper and lower banks of the river. The jungler should help with this as well as the rest of the map. If enemies keep attacking from a certain point on the map or hiding in a certain bush before making the jump, you’ll want to keep that area safe.
Deployment lanes should be the top priority if the enemy jungler is constantly destroying you. However, if your enemy jungler is heavily focused on other lanes, you are free to use your wards for other things. For example, if you’re in the bot lane and enemy support keeps pushing your team into the bush, keeping the bush closest to them can be a quick way to keep them visible and retreat.
Generally, remembering a totem is one of the hardest parts of getting started with League of Legends. Players must try to avoid saving their totems. It eventually expires, which means players should scatter them as much as possible as they move around the map.
