Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has publicly denounced a fake Fortnite cryptocurrency account known as Fortnite Token, calling it a scam unrelated to Fortnite or Epic Games. He said the company’s lawyers are already working to shut down the illegal cryptocurrency.
“Fortnite doesn’t have cryptocurrency,” Sweeney said. of twitter Monday. “Twitter accounts promoting such a thing are scammers. Epic lawyers are above that. It’s also a shame that cryptocurrency markets allow such a thing.

Fortnite Token, active since late 2021, is defending itself against Sweeney’s claims.
“Fortnite Token is not a fraudulent cryptocurrency project,” he wrote. “Instead, it is a highly public, community-driven, game-built Fortnite cryptocurrency project, with no owner or corporate structure or CEO to decide its future.
That defense doesn’t seem to impress Sweeney much.
“However, trademarks and copyrights don’t work that way,” he replied. “You may not use Fortnite names and images to create unrelated product without permission.”

Sweeney’s issues seem to be more specific to Fortnite Token than to cryptocurrency in general. It has previously stated that it supports games using blockchain technology “provided they comply with applicable laws, explain their terms and conditions, and meet the age limit set by the relevant group.”
In fact, the Epic Games Store will see Grit, a cowboy fighting royalty with NFTs, launching in the near future. Although a release date has yet to be set, it will be the first game to be sold in such a store.
