The reckless comic that Brubaker and Phillips bring to life as a cheap detective – Danger Room

Panini Comics publishes the new saga of the amazing creative duo.

tandem created Ed Brubaker Yup Sean Phillips They created and studied film noir from all possible aspects. Yet they continue to find new forms, subgenres, and styles to rethink. And the new proposal always makes the usual reader think: “Of course it made sense to do that”. So, how can a detective novel lover not be his own detective/fixer?

And from that drive and need Ethan Reckless was born. RecklessThe couple’s new saga. And in this comic, we witness the creation of a new crime universe where everything is very similar to what they both usually deal with.† But at the same time, there are enough differences to attract it.

After completing the new steps judicialkill or die and that scandalous piece called pastryBrubaker and Phillips had to take another step. And this turns into a project that does not lose the deconstructive inertia they dragged into.

And this Reckless† The boy who admires the powerful illustrated covers of the novels is the ghost of Brubaker. hard boiled from his father and imagined the stories they might contain. The joy of someone doing something they’ve always wanted to do with all the comfort and creative freedom in the world. It is the desire to create something that works perfectly.

But in addition to that, this work exudes an atmosphere of violence that was so strong from the start. It’s part of a start on medias res that will inevitably make you want to learn more as soon as you open the book. From there, it starts from the premise: a woman from the past re-enters the life of the main character. He needs to ask you a favor. Of course, it will blow up his world and put him in extreme danger.

Despite being one of Brubaker’s usual sources, first-person narration (sometimes with some omniscient trappings) resurfaces. But it fits here more than ever, as it’s a very direct way to learn about and empathize with the entire troubled past of the character and his world. This does not mean that the information mentioned is not presented in a stimulating and visual way, it means that it can enrich the whole. Aside from being very typical for this kind of story, voiceover should not be missing here either.

One of the most encouraging achievements of this project is temporary settlement. Unlike most detective novels, it is not contemporary with the period in which it was designed. Nor do they make a logical decision to establish the golden age of history in the 1930s and 1940s. hard boiledThey chose to set the story from a mythological perspective in the 1980s.

But not out of empty cultural nostalgia. They decided to put it there because there is a certain spirit of decadence that shares this historic period with the Great Depression. The hippie ideal was broken and replaced by both punk and the violence caused by the Reagan administration.

At the heart of the work are the consequences of the excesses of the 1970s and the Vietnam War. The characters are complex, fragmented, and morally ambiguous. Paradoxically, black embraces gray and tries to explain crime. And this is no exception. All the characters are intricately contradictory and above all the product of their own circumstances.

Although this tandem is a story full of characters, it has produced surprising social and political work. Some of these themes covered here come from his earlier work, but never more so centrally.

In contrast, going through this time period means you can’t make a typical detective story. drinking things like the big lebowskiACCORDING TO ME, pure immorality or long goodbyeAlthough they aim to deconstruct or even destroy the subspecies, Reckless they have other purposes as well, the fact is they share some aesthetic and formal approaches.

Sean Phillips’ art once again demonstrates why this is the best option for this type of story. An excellent character who perfectly understands what each story needs and is able to adapt his style lightly and subtly. Reckless it is daytime and sunnier, and it can convey the arid atmosphere required by the cartoonist story. He generally continues to use the same tools, but it is admirable to seek out new ways to compose and even to play with the psychedelics of the time.

The same goes for the colors of Jacob Phillips, who prefers warm tones and tones of yellow and orange, unlike other projects he’s been involved in. Prefer naturalistic solutions without sacrificing light tones. Aesthetically it has nothing to do with the other stripes of the Brubaker/Phillips brand and is more distinctive than this color.

panini comics so he is committed to bringing all the works of Brubaker and Phillips and nothing less. It is hoped that this couple will continue their continuation with regard to their other published work.

Reckless is the new game from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. Another comic in his extensive career. They don’t seem to surprise anyone right now. When you read these pages, you always know what you will find before you even start. But if what they’ve given you is this perfect, all that’s left is this project. Another from the list of achievements that resonated endlessly. No one can make better genre stories than them. And make it last.
