Sallybooks brings us a horror comic that combines the indie comic style with classic stories.

sally’s books Spanish writers do a great job when it comes to publishing. In principle this shouldn’t even be news, but when things are published with such a good work, it’s worth commenting on. In this case a horror comic with a very alternative aspect to show a story that tastes like a classic story† Something quickly explained may seem like a complex mix, but it is not at all.

prickly heart A story that has undergone many pitch changes, from intrigue and horror to an ending that seems to imply an epic fantasy. The story takes us into a forest in the north. SpainUrdi forest† A dangerous place inhabited by a creature that seems to abduct people. This is what happens to the main character Aldarawho lost her fiancée and has lived ever since as a witch isolated from the world at the edge of the forest. until years later tristanThe young son of a local nobleman comes to the rescue as his sister is lost in the sinister forest of Urdi.

What gives focus to the plot is how the author does it. Melek M. Sancho, maintaining interest in the story through the interests of the characters. Their characters’ conflicts and goals make them feel close. Empathy is key to making readers feel more connected to the story, and this is especially important in horror stories. In this way, when one of the characters suffers, the reader suffers too. When characters clash, sometimes as between the character of a nobleman or his son Ferdinandor with the priest Lake and the witch the reader is forced to choose a side that involves him more in the story.† It is clear that a lot of thought goes into the structure of the story.

Now it’s time to talk about the elephant in the room: the drawing. his style William Monko It is difficult to enter. It’s a comic that might not attract much attention or make matters worse if it’s overlooked. And this is the fault of the reader’s bias, in case it happens. because It is enough to read the first two or three pages to confirm that he knows how to publish and how he presents it is available to very few people.† One of the comics that best reflects fear in its vignettes. But let’s talk parts.

The drawing style is oddly cartoony, full of action but not much detail. He conscientiously violates certain rules, such as anatomy, and does so without shame. They are unsightly bloated, ugly and even ugly figures. As our colleague stated, with this aesthetic framed in the horror genre, Ivan Galianomay be included in the national alternative terror movement, in which the authors are: Isa Ibaibarriaga or Ana Galvan.

This feeling of unease, of fear, is exactly what the author wanted to convey to the readers. Surprisingly though, it ultimately works so well on its pages that it accomplishes what others fail to do. Because depicting terror in a comic is a very difficult task, because without the support of other elements such as music or light, to give two examples, visual aids are limited and some emotions are difficult to convey with images alone. † Still, it’s surprising that there are vignettes that stay in mind with surprising ease after two or three pages. The way to capture the sinister gaze in the dark, the red and almost vertical eyes… they manage to annoy the reader in the best possible way.

Another aspect that should be emphasized is the use of color. A brilliant performance that contrasts with the calmer and more natural use of the rest of the vignettes, creating an impressive atmosphere in the horror scenes that arouse suspense for the reader. The drawing style, along with the use of color, makes it flow together like an ink wash that darkens the scariest places and brightens the rest. It’s a good combination that only benefits the reading.

Heart of Thorns is undoubtedly a pleasant surprise. The style of drawing may cause rejection for those unaccustomed to the alternative style of terror, but once this ‘barrier’ is overcome, the story is bogged down from start to finish. A scary story with an atmosphere similar to the classic tales of the Brothers Grimm. A great comic that does exactly what it wants, both narratively and visually. A gem of a complex genre of Spanish comics that accomplished what many others failed to do.
