DMZ Starts at Second American Civil War HBOMax – Danger Room –

HBOMax bets on an adaptation of the cult series from the Vertigo era.

War is one of the constants that guide human development. Not surprisingly, we are the only animals to have invented a weapon like the atomic bomb. It is still a mechanism with only one function: to destroy as many people as possible as efficiently as possible. All of history has been bathed in the blood of innocents in various ways or worse, caught in the crossfire. We are who we are…

The West went through a long period of peace marked by local conflicts and a tense calm. This is the harbinger of the ultimate conflict between NATO and Russia, which we hope seems to have ended with the start of the invasion of Ukraine. When that happens, no one wins. These are strange times…

An equally bizarre coincidence as the movie premiere DMZcomic book adaptation fear of heights created by Brian Wood and together Riccardo BurchielliThe show was a hit back then, but it seems like it got a little ridiculed after the writers’ plot of abuse came to light… In any case, the series has speculated about the possibility of another civil war in the United States and what this split will mean for society. As expected, it is a large-scale combat environment where various factions do not stand still. One of the successes of the series was that it tried to focus on telling the stories of civilians and how the context of the war affected them.

This comic was clearly a response to the shock caused by 9/11 and the subsequent American warmongering. And it seems that this title will bring tragedies as well…

In fact, the production of this series has been severely affected by COVID: it should have been a multi-season series and was written that way until production problems caused by the pandemic meant it was eventually reformulated as a four-episode series. The miniseries that currently have HBOmax have arrived (or HBOMax Spain has not uploaded the fourth episode at the time of writing. And there is no concrete word on when they will add it to their catalog…). All of this is something that works in his favor, even if it doesn’t seem like it.

All these issues took their chance: it gave the series some packaging and strength by allowing them to allocate the budget per episode more generously. A very flashy mini-series in terms of budget, it meets expectations in terms of viewing.

Unfortunately the same cannot be said for direction, as there is no truly innovative image or image that stays on the viewer’s retina. On the contrary, Ava DuVernay’s proposal is guilty of being too conventional. That’s a mistake when it comes to this production, which has an aesthetic effect like the comic book does. It is very disadvantageous that this series is not seen as a general approach. There was a lot of potential in both the source material and the creative team and it looks like a very realistic custom product.

Particularly serious is the failure of various groups to bring out the pop spirit in a post-apocalyptic context that demands it. It was as if there was an urge to start something unhindered, but they did not dare to break the naturalness that permeated the images. It is an inner struggle that can be seen throughout the images. So it stays in a place where no one is, because in the end one or the other does not happen…

It’s a pity, because in someone else’s hands it affects a foundation, where the result will be more interesting. Robert Patino’s screenplay is best known for his work on it. Sons of Lawlessness and together western worldpretty solid. He creates a story told with a very dramatic pulse and knows how to play cards to surprise the audience. It has a bit more obvious and obvious endings than the others, but it is a remarkable work that manages to impress in general and asks the audience to include it in the story.

It should also be noted that it is a work with a great rhythm that fulfills the function of keeping the audience attentive. In fact, it can be said that he does not seem more assertive in his defense. And it has reeds so it finally finds its audience. It’s late, however, because the market for such stories is saturated (and for the most part, reality is starting to look more and more like these fictions). And this is against him: the element of surprise will not help him.

While these are all butts that could be added to this miniseries, the truth is the charisma of actresses Rosario Dawson (It carries all the dramatic weight of Alma, a very secondary character in the comic who has given her space to explore. It’s not a particularly faithful adaptation…) and the actors Benjamin BrattHis presence makes this series a big hit. It would be much harder to accept with players with less charisma because unfortunately it did. And End Man.

DMZ It’s a proposition that struggles to have its own identity at a time when a barrage of post-apocalyptic series (and movies) continues to emerge. The concept inherited from the comic may be refreshing and new, but it’s not enough. Give me a lime and a sand. It is an imperfect product that puts fun above all else and makes it easy to consume. But it leaves no trace… The problem is that the television audience is greedy and used to things that go beyond all that. Therefore, it does not stop at giving a feeling of a missed opportunity and also with encouraging offers as well as on the same platform. Eleven Stations† Maybe next time…
