With Batman looming, ECC Ediciones is releasing a comic book edition of the film’s screenwriter, Mattson Tomlin.
What makes a character last for decades? There is commercial motivation, the pace of American publications, and very strong sustained marketing that has led to an icon being nearly ubiquitous in the lives of locals and foreigners. Ok, but others relied on it and got burned on the way. However, others are just as or more relevant at birth. How is this possible?
There is only one possible explanation: a blank canvas in their own way. In their concept, it is something very simple that anyone can understand. But as one reflects more and more, there are many obscure features that allow an author to reflect and give a number of nuances that contribute to his legacy. But another writer can switch to the other side and everything stays consistent.
They are characters with a mythology that has evolved over the years but is constantly being rediscovered. Herein lies its strength: Instead of being more and more limited to a universe to be one thing, everything must be right. Therefore, even after a century, they are still alive.
This is evident in the comic book world, where each new stage is tangentially different from the previous one. But it can also be applied to the cinema with Robert Pattinson’s The Batman, which gives the Dark Knight look that everyone is looking forward to.† And it’s only been a few months since the last movie remake of the character was seen…
As a preview of the movie, DC had the screenwriter of the movie: Mattson Tomlin to draw a story along the line DC Black Label† Batman: trickster an example of the writer’s storytelling abilities† And therefore, this project should be understood. When you enter the room where the movie directed by Matt Reeves is projected, first contact with everything you expect. He’s also someone who is trying to work on his own and wants to take Gotham to a land that is subject to nothing but the authoritarian approach of the Night Lord.
However, this does not mean that you forget to captivate the reader from the very first moment. An absolutely atmospheric piece that dares call its own iconography and puts a spin on what is known about Batman.
The premise is based on a Bruce Wayne, consumed by acts of violence, accused of murders allegedly committed by Batman. But he is not responsible. There is another Batman who has “damaged” his name. Who is he and what is he answering? This dichotomy between everything Batman could be if he lets go and what he really is is at the heart of the story.
But the character was also taken from an unconventional perspective: sociological. Topics such as Gotham’s business context and the impact of vigilantes’ adventures or the causes of crime in the city are analyzed, issues that are normally overlooked in favor of speedy conspiracies. This does not mean that the rhythm has lost its power, but it provides a very specific approach and is therefore stimulating. It’s closer to a classic film noir terrain with very, very intense atmospheres than a traditional superhero comic.
The story is told from three perspectives: a police officer in charge of the case, Leslie Thompkins acting as the protagonist’s devoted psychological therapist, and Batman himself. DThe two are very interesting female characters, and that makes us put the magnifying glass on the anti-hero in an unusual way.† Despite having a call of its own, the cubist does not lose an ounce of its tangibleness.
This is a very ambitious project and it seems very clear what it wants to convey. And it was done in a very meaningful way. Building your own universe with a truly innovative approach. Not to reinvent what is known about this microcosm, but to offer a very unconventional perspective. It looks easy, but with a character that has gone through so many hands, it’s something that really deserves it.
artistic work Andrea Sorrentino on another level. He is a successful writer with a constantly evocative narrative that manages to produce an inexhaustible amount of creative and subversive compositions. With a voice that always manages to exceed expectations and is defined enough to divide the reader. A job whose only constant is to deconstruct shapes and invent new counting methods. And here he returns to make memes. He is more or less one of those writers who always finds new ways.
Jordie Bellaire this sets the color to feed the strip’s density. Opt for muted, dark colors where bursts of color explode with virulence in the eyes of the reader. It gives it a very ominous, mysterious and dark beautiful sky. Another flawless job from the combined colorist.
ECC Versions The story is available at a reasonable price in the original three-volume hardcover edition, or more recently in a single volume. Logically better to buy the latest reprint† In any case, some extras are missing to complete the experience. In all cases, the material has been processed with the usual care of this publisher.
Batman: trickster He seems to have no other intention than to build a character story and find clues as to who this person wearing a bat suit is to face crime on his own terms every night. The point is not to reinvent the icon, but to put it in front of a distorting mirror to understand who it is. And so it’s a good portrait and a very personal and interesting way to understand what Batman’s essence is. Except it’s a lot of fun to read.
