However, Valhalla Chronicles was full of bugs, some of which were more interesting than the game itself.
Everything needs to be tried. Paradox Interactiveknown today mainly as the king of strategies with the main jewels at the head, like Europe Universalis III or Crusaders Kings IItried to create a fantasy role-playing game in the style of Baldur’s Gate early in their career.
The result was a game Chronicles of Valhalla – which the developers themselves called at least unsuccessful. There were so many bugs in it that some of them were even more interesting than the gameplay itself.
According to creative director Johan Andersson, at the time the development team consisted of only five or six people trying to work on multiple games at once, which proved to be too much of a burden. The result was a game riddled with technical instability, lack of thought and, ultimately, profitable losing.
Luckily for Paradox, this was a move that steered them toward what they really excel at: grand strategy. Sometimes you just need to take a step back to find out what your true strengths are.
